Problems & How to Deal With Them

Subscribe Now

You’ll find it’s common that problems occur if a workplace doesn’t have a standard operating procedure (SOP), or even if they do, at times they are poorly designed. A standard operating procedure ensures processes follow a standard method no matter who is performing them, and if it’s not used properly this can cause problems in every preparation activity, which can be time wasting.

Standard operating procedures also ensure the essential safety measures are in place, this will prevent any unnecessary accidents or delays. Potential problems that frequently occur due to not having a standard operating procedure are; incorrect or poor-quality materials, quantity of materials, wrong tools and equipment, and waiting for the delivery of your materials.

Thus, to avoid these problems, it’s always handy to have checklists, they will identify problems early, will show patterns of nonconformance, and identify any targets that haven’t been met. Try to make enhancements where you think it is applicable and consult with your supervisor, though if you require any assistance, seek help from your manager or an organisation specialist. It’s important to document everything, and it must be done legibly as errors in documentation may cause problems in the future, that are unnecessary.

 Learning Objectives:
 •    Distinguish why a standard operating procedure (SOP) is required in a workplace
 •    Identify what problems can occur if a standard operating procedure is not present, and how this might affect a workplace
 •    Within a standard operating procedure, examine why it’s important to have checklists
