PDCA & Action Planning

Another Kaizen technique to think about is plan, do, check, act (PDCA), also named as the Deming Cycle. This cycle refers to making a plan to follow and act upon, and to document the process and analyse the results gathered.

In a productive workplace environment, you’re constantly looking to make sustainable improvements to the process to avoid waste or try and minimise it to become more efficient, thus it’s essential to make a clear record of any changes and the effect on them, this is considered to be a fundamental in continuous improvement.

Moreover, this involves identifying a problem, analysing it, making some changes, reviewing those changes and deciding whether improvements need to be made, and if they’re sustainable.

Any documents should be constantly ongoing, updated regularly, and they must represent a true depiction of the current situation of the project, at any given time, moreover these documents must be legible for everyone to understand and follow.

Once the PDCA cycle is completed, and you’ve decided whether to adopt, adjust or abandon the change of process, you need to transfer the responsibility for sustainment to the process owner, in other words, sharing the results of your PDCA, to those it will affect.

Learning Objectives:
 •    Identify the fundamentals of what PDCA is
 •    Distinguish what the fundamentals of continuous improvement are
 •    Establish what techniques are involved in making continuous improvement sustainable
