Coaching is more than just a word of encouragement. The principles are all simple. It is about unlocking the potential in your team. Identifying strengths and weaknesses and getting the best from individuals to achieve better results. It is about improving performance, and the quicker it happens, the better. A good coach knows what is required to do a job well, not just well but to exceed expectations. 

To do that, a leader must be willing to pay attention to the details and identify what are good and bad techniques. If staff happen to make mistakes then offer training solutions. It is important to keep records of what is being said within your team. The actions carried out and the plan to put in place. This helps you track any progress and the records you keep are useful for evaluation and follow up meetings. 

Importantly, you must turn this process into a positive about improving performance, not finding faults.
