The general purpose of a visual management system is to provide information to help manage a work area as effectively as possible; this is especially helpful as all the necessary information regarding the workplace and its operation is just made visually.
It must be done in a way that any authorised individual can grasp the current status of the area quickly and easily.
Ultimately, the type of visual management will depend on its purpose, and they all have their advantages, though the key objective is to keep things simple and immediate.
If the purpose of the visual management system is to inform, then you can use clocks, 5s score sheets, process charts, standard operating procedures, KPIs, and indicator lights on equipment. These methods give quick access as to how something is performing, or what the current status is.
If the purpose is to control, then there will be a measure to compare, that clearly indicates the target and actual state of a process or area, so that any anomaly is detected immediately, and any corrective action can be taken.
